Vancouver man to stand trial for bestiality

VANCOUVER - A 28 -year-old Surrey man will stand trial for allegedly engaging in sexual acts with one of his three dogs, a charge rarely seen before the courts.

Shon Samujh appeared in court last week for one charge of bestiality following an SPCA investigation that began in 2010.

“We were tipped off about the condition of one of his dogs by a veterinarian, so we immediately launched an investigation,” said SPCA spokesperson Lorie Gibbons adding Samujh had appealed to get his dogs back but was denied.

The three dogs, believed to be of a Rottweiler mix, have since been adopted.

Samujh, whose Facebook profile photo shows him nuzzling a dog, has written a paper arguing for bestiality, titled For the love of dog: On the legal prohibition of zoophilia in Canada and the United States.

“Antizoophilia laws … infringe upon fundamental individual freedoms,” Samujh wrote, adding sexual interaction with animals for human gratification is a part of pet ownership.

“It’s upsetting that he appears to feel that this is his right it definitely isn’t,” Gibbons said, adding even those who suspect bestiality are often nervous about reporting it because of its disturbing nature.

Samujh is scheduled to appear in court next on March 14.
